Interior Colour Schemes
It is not necessary to follow theories of design and the colour wheel to find a successful scheme but most of the time makes it easier to make colour choices.
Follow the Colour Wheel
A colour wheel is a great reference tool for modifying and intensifying two or more colours. Like red and green, which are complementary (opposite) colours, are most intense when used together. You may be surprised at how many combinations compliments each other, and you may even become attracted to entirely new colour palettes. The colour wheel also illustrates the visual temperature of a colour. Draw a line from the yellow-green mark on the colour wheel all the way down to the red-violet; you’ll see that all the colours on the left are warm and the colours on the right are cool.
As you choose colours, don’t forget to consider the value. A mix of values within your colour scheme helps to keep a palette with multiple hues from becoming chaotic. Try choosing one dark, one bright and one light colour, and one bright colour, the colour that becomes the dominant hue in the room depends on your personal preference. You can also choose colour combinations that will result to clean and bright, or soft and subtle.
You may also want to consider how the colours affects your mood. Certain colours tend to get a similar reaction from most people – the overall difference being in the shade or tones used. So sensibly choose when it comes to decorating.
Draw and design your home
If you’re wary of colour, test it first. Create a plan of your home and list what will be in each room, such as the carpet, wall colours, and furniture. Consider the items to be incorporated into the palette. Plan the house one room at a time. For an easy palette, use one colour in different proportions in all rooms: as a wall colour in one room and accent in another.
